About Carbon Footpath

What is carbonfootpath.com?

Carbonfootpath.com is a tool that allows individuals to track their household carbon emissions over time, set themselves targets and see how they're doing against these targets. The hope is that people will use this as a tool to help monitor their carbon emissions.

This is the first version that's been made live. We're interested in what you think of it and would love to hear any comments you've got or suggestions for improvement use the contact page to get in touch.

How much does it cost to use carbonfootpath.com?

It's free... and we don't currently anticipate any circumstances that will cause this to change.

What happens to the data I enter?

The data you enter is stored. Our privacy policy has full information about how we handle your data but the key points are -

  • Carbon Footpath does not rent or sell your personal information
  • Carbon Footpath does not share personal information about you with other people or organisations

Who's behind carbonfootpath.com?

The initial idea and the site design were by Gordon Cowtan (department-e.co.uk) and the brilliantly-clever, behind-the-scenes coding has been done by Jason and Lewis at Magic Lamp (magiclamp.co.uk).

You can contact us via the contact page.

How can I perform this type of calculation for my company/organisation?

We're currently working on a commercial version. Contact us for more information.

How does carbonfootpath.com perform the calculations?

For the most part, we use DEFRA approved calculations. There are a few things these guidelines don't cover, like hybrid cars where we've made an estimate for the calculations.

We expect to update the calculations as new or more accurate information becomes available so you might find the values of your footprints change slightly over time.

Are you planning any improvements to the site?

Yes. As stated above this is the first live version and we're interested in feedback. However, we've got some ideas of our own so we're already working on improvements to the Target tab and also a new tab currently called What If. We expect to get both of these up and running in the next few months.

I don't live in the UK, can I still use the site?

You're welcome to use it but some of calculations will be incorrect for your country. For example, the carbon emissions from electricity use are based on the mix of different types of generation which varies from country to country.

Creating different versions for different countries should be fairly easy to do so we might decide to do this at some vague and indefinable point in the future.

Where can I find out more carbon footprinting?

It's a bit of a hot topic at the moment so there's lots of stuff out there on this. Try googling for carbon footprint or have a look at the Wikipedia page on the subject.
